Signal definition and resource management techniques for upcoming communication and broadcasting systems

Résumé

My research activities have addressed 3 main topics. The first targets devising algorithms for coded modulations. It was the subject of 9 supervised PhDs and one post-doc. The work concerns code design for binary and non-binary codes with simplified decoding algorithms, their association with high order modulations and multiple antennas, the study of high diversity schemes for severe channel conditions and the support of high throughput. Results led to contributions in 3GPP for the definition of 5G and in several DVB standards where some of the proposals were adopted. The second addresses the study of filtered waveforms. Solutions were proposed for the transmitter and the receiver to address their drawbacks and were validated via hardware prototyping. This work was the subject of 2 PhDs (1 awarded URSI Radioscience PhD prize in 2019) and 2 post-docs. The developed platform within 2 successive H2020 EU projects was presented at several demonstration events, including the Mobile World Congress in 2015. Beyond 5G systems are expected to support an everlasting increase in number of connected devices with limited spectral resources. Non Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) can be used to this effect. The 3rd topic explored efficient resource and power allocation techniques tailored to answer the increase in network access including NOMA systems. It was the subject of 3 supervised PhDs. Solutions were proposed for several relevant contexts such as UAVs as flying base stations, distributed antenna systems, base station coordination, interference management and underlay D2D communications. Finally, future works towards the proposal of solutions to support massive access are described.
